The sequence of operation is one of the most important design aspects of any HVAC system. Without a proper sequence, the system is left to operate wildly—or not at all. When approached methodically, the process can be broken into smaller segments. We’ll look at the steps required to create a successful sequence of operation using a single-zone variable air volume (VAV) air handling unit serving a convention space. These same steps can be applied to any piece of equipment.
This study evaluates the electricity savings that can be gained by installing ductless heat pumps (DHPs) in multifamily and small commercial applications. A total of 12 multifamily units were submetered in two localities; 188 units were included in the accompanying utility billing analysis.
New super-efficient rooftop units that heat and cool commercial buildings offer significant energy and dollar savings, say scientists at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. They found that the devices reduce energy costs an average of about 41 percent compared to units in operation today.
Advanced thermostats communicate to the Internet, enabling visibility and control of HVAC systems via the web. Communication capabilities create opportunities for energy and demand savings through smarter controls and enhanced HVAC performance management by maintenance staff. Additionally, the advanced thermostats can integrate with and control other energy consuming systems, such as lighting.
Data loggers provide unbiased evidence of system operations – good and bad. They can help locate the source of comfort problems, diagnose HVAC equipment operation, identify potential energy efficiency upgrades, verify savings, and contribute to achieving LEED certification.
Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment, such as boilers, chillers, air handlers, furnaces, and heat pumps, make up some of the largest sources of energy consumption in most buildings. Not surprisingly, there is a big opportunity to optimize and reduce this consumption with better management and equipment improvements.
