Xcel tries to generate efficiency among customers

Xcel Energy would like you to take a cold shower — and keep it short. Wash your clothes in cold water too, though not necessarily in the shower.

Those are just a few of the kinds of steps it may take for Xcel to meet its goals to cut the demand for electricity and gas as part of its mandated energy-efficiency program.

Colorado’s largest utility is looking at the shower and the washing machine because, as efficiency takes hold, it is getting harder to find savings, company officials say.

Xcel has been pursuing energy efficiency, or “demand-side management,” or DSM, since 1996 and under a state energy-efficiency law since 2007.
