Energy-efficient industrial technologies address a key challenge of the 21st century: how can industries move towards cleaner, more sustainable practices while at the same time increase their competitiveness?
As global energy-efficient industrial technologies clamour to answer this question, it is unsurprising their market was valued at $38 billion in 2013. This number can only be expected to grow as the need for sustainable industries becomes more pressing.
In 2011, the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), a non-profit research body, released a table providing a sample of emerging energy-efficient technologies in numerous industries.
Notable inclusions are the roller kiln, for use in the production of clay products, and dry sheet forming. Roller kilns can be used to fire pottery of a range of sizes while consuming very little fuel. Dry sheet forming, on the other hand, is the creation of paper without the addition of water. Instead, fibres are dispersed mechanically or through air laying techniques.
RMI estimates that the roller kiln is 59% more energy efficient than other clay firing technologies, whilst dry sheet forming has an energy efficiency 47% higher than competing practices.
